From 24 to 28 August 2025, the European photonics community will come together in Delft, The Netherlands, for the European Optical Society Annual Meeting (EOSAM 2025). This annual event serves as a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange between researchers, innovators and EU projects that are shaping the future of optics and photonics.

As part of the EU Project Session, our colleague Dr. Homa Zarebidaki (CSEM) will present the ELENA Project, a Horizon 2020 initiative that builds a coherent European supply chain for thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

At LOLIPOP, we are focused on advancing polarization-based photonic integration using silicon nitride and lithium niobate technologies. The work carried out in ELENA is highly complementary to our mission.

  • By ensuring a scalable, CMOS-compatible TFLN platform, ELENA accelerates the broader adoption of lithium niobate in integrated photonics.

  • The three demonstrators — a high-linearity modulator, a widely tunable laser, and an integrated frequency shifter — directly support application areas where LOLIPOP also aims to make an impact, such as telecommunications, metrology, and quantum technologies.

Together, these efforts strengthen the European photonics value chain, ensuring that cutting-edge technologies can move from research labs to industrial adoption.

Dr. Homa Zarebidaki, Senior R&D Engineer and Photonic Component Coordinator at CSEM, brings deep expertise in integrated photonics design, fabrication processes, and device characterization. Since 2022, she has been driving innovation in TFLN technology, with a focus on fabrication processes and Process Design Kit (PDK) development. She also coordinates R&D activities across TFLN PICs, opto-mechanics, and MEMS, making her a central figure in the European photonics ecosystem.

For LOLIPOP, participating in events like EOSAM 2025 is not just about showcasing research, but also about connecting with complementary initiatives such as ELENA. Collaboration across projects ensures that Europe remains at the forefront of integrated photonics, advancing technologies that will power next-generation communication systems, precision measurement, and quantum innovation.
